Walking in memory of Doreeners!
This year I am walking in memory of my very dear friend, Doreen Hawley.
Doreen loved all animals and I think her gentleness and kindness made animals love and trust her in return. Whether it was cows (and calves!), ducks (and ducklings!), geese (and goslings!), cats (and kittens!), horses (and foals!), donkeys (she only had an older donkey, but I am sure she would've loved a young donkey!), goats (and kids!), dogs (and puppies!), ALL of the wild animals outside, sheep (and especially the day-old lambs!), it didn't matter -- Doreen loved them all!
But what she truly best at was sharing her love of animals with everyone at the Erie County Fair with her beloved Charlie and their family. Doreen was friendly and warm with everyone and whether they realized it or not, she was teaching them. It was in her nature to make everyone feel welcome and many asked questions that they might not otherwise have asked. People had the opportunity to see farming through her eyes and she encouraged them to value all animals, not just the pets that they had at home.
Doreen was a special lady who was loved by every single person who knew her. I miss everything about her -- her little chuckle, the way she would say, "oh kaaaay," when something wasn't quite right, and most of all, the all-encompassing way she loved her family, friends, and animals. They just don't make them as genuinely wonderful as Doreen anymore.
If I can raise $1,000, I believe I can get a PawsWay brick at the SPCA and I'd love to have a little bit of Doreeners here at the SPCA. So please, if you can, donate a little something so a piece of Doreen's spirit can live on helping animals at the SPCA.
